Estaing

Midi-Pyrénées

At the castle’s foot, the Coussane river streaming from the mounts Aubrac, blends its waters to that of the Lot river.

From year 1000 to the Revolution, the lords of Estaing not only wrote the history of their village. As he saved the king at the battle of Bouvines in 1214, Pierre-Tristan is given right to add the royal lily to the colours of his family. In 1368, Pierre is appointed Cardinal and governor of the papal state in Avignon. Under Louis the 16th, vice-admiral Charles Henri is distinguished in battle during the American war of Independence. The château of the Destaing family dominates the Renaissance mansions around.
